History of Reiki

1802-1883 (approximate dates given)

Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by his students in Japan, is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. He was born on August 15, 1865 in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology and religion. It is thought that he was from a wealthy family as in Japan only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. Eventually he became the secretary to Pei Gotoushin, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. The connections Usui Sensei made at this job helped him to become a successful businessman.

The history of Reiki goes back to the teachings of Dr. Makio Usui, in the late 1800's, the founder of Reiki. His teaching have been passed down in woral and written traditions. Dr. Usui looked for a way to heal through the 'light of God' which is the way Jesus had healed. This set him on a journey of many years.

Studying first at Christian schools in the US, for where else to learn of Jesus, but with no results. In the Christian schools the method was not known. It was suggested he study Buddhist writings since the Buddh had also healed. This took more years studying at a monastary in the Orient. Nowhere could he find the answers.

In Japan he toured many temples asking for knowledge of how the Buddha had healed. At each one the priests said they were more concerned with spiritual than physical well being. In one small monastary he found some ancient Sanskrit writings from India (or perhaps Tibet).

After a few more years of study, he felt he had come to an understanding and that to go further required indepth meditation. He declared to the monks of this monastary his intention to fast and meditate for 21 days at a nearby mountain - Mount Koriyama - a mountain known as an excellent place for meditation.

He told the Monk, "If I do not some back on the night of the twenty-first day. on the twenty-second morning. send out a search party to find my body. I will be dead. I shall go through this meditation without food - only water."
He climbed the mountain. He went to the mountain and gathered 21 stones with which to count the days. Each day he would throw away a stone and in this way count the time. On the 20th day nothing had come as yet and he threw away the last stone saying, "Well, this is it, either I get the answer tonight or I do not".

In the night on the horizon he could see a ball of light coming towards him. The first instinct was to get out of the way, but he realized this might just be what he was waiting for, so allowed it to hit him right in the forehead. As it struck him he was taken on a journey and shown bubbles of all the colors of the rainbow in which were the symbols of Reiki, the very same symbols in the Tibetan writings he was studying but had been unable to understand.

Millions and millions of bubbles danced before him, then moved to his left. Usui counted seven colors. "I was blessed today!" A great white light came from his right. Golden symbols appeared, one after another. They radiated out in front of him, like on a movie screen, as if to say, "Remember! Remember!" As he watched them, there was total understanding.

He dusted himself off, picked up his cane and straw hat, then took the first steps of his twenty-five mile trek to Kyoto. The Zen monks were expecting him at the temple by sundown. He was surprised that he hadn't died of starvation and didn't feel hungry anymore. "This was indeed a miracle," he thought.

Near the foot of the mountain, Dr Usui stubbed a big toe on a rock. The blow lifted the toenail. Blood spurted out. The pain thumped with his heartbeat.

He sat down and held the toe in his hands. The pain subsided. The bleeding stopped. He continued to hold it till there was no more pain. Then he looked at the toe, he was amazed and delighted to see the nail back in its normal position. There was no indication of injury except dried blood. "This is indeed a second miracle!" he thought.

On the trip back he healed the ailing tooth of a young girl by placing his hands on her face. This was his third miracle in one day. In exchange for the healing, the girl's uncle gave Dr. Usui some food. He ate heartily though not getting sick after breaking a 21 day fast.

These are known as Dr. Usui's first four miracles.
Once back at the Zen temple, Dr. Usui healed the Monk who had been suffering from arthritis and back ache.

He wanted to use these abilities to help others, he spent the next seven years in the beggars section of Tokyo healing the poor and sick people there, sending them to a priest to assist finding them employment, and elevating them out of poverty. After the seven years he noticed familiar faces, those of people whom he'd healed long ago who were back again. Asking them, they complained that life outside beggartown was too hard and that it was much simpler to beg for a living. They had thrown away the gift of health, as if it had no value, to return to the supposed comfort of the life they knew.

This threw Usui into a quandry and he returned to the monastery. From this he realized he hadn't taught gratitude along with the healing. That he'd focussed on the physical ailments without dealing with the spiritual matters. The people did not understand the value of the gift he gave them.

Dr. Usui returned to the monastary for furth reflection and planning. After some time in the monastery he developed precepts. In this new plan he traveled around the countryside from village to village. In each one he stood in a public place during the day holding aloft a lit torch. When people told him he didn't need a torch in daylight, he answered was he was looking for the few who are interested in improving themselves. In this way he traveled around teaching and healing, working both with the spiritual healing as well as physical healing.

Dr. Hayashi was a retired naval officer. He received the Reiki Master initiation from Dr. Usui about 1925 at the age of 47.

During these travels he met Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a Naval Commander in the Naval Reserve. He came from a well educated and well to do family. He met Dr. Usui in the marketplace holding a lit torch announcing his lecture at a nearby temple. Dr. Hayashi was very impressed with the sincerity and conviction of Dr. Usui. When asked by Usui to accompany him in his travels, Dr. Hayashi agreed. They traveled around teaching and healing.

After Dr. Usui passed on, Dr. Hayashi became the leader of Reiki. Dr. Hayashi opened a clinic in Tokyo near the Imperial Palace. It consisted of eight beds in a large room, two practitioners per patient. One would treat the head and the other would be on the right treating the stomach area. Then both would treat the patients back. The practitioners all worked here doing healings. They would also go to the homes of sick people for house calls.

To become a Reiki Practitioner in that time one had to be accepted by the masters in the Reiki organization, and second had to promise to use Reiki daily and volunteer some hours to practice Reiki regularly in the clinic.

Some believe that Dr. Hayashi developed the practice of treatment by using specific hand placements over the body. Being of a military background, and therefore more organized, Dr. Hayashi would have preferred an organized method of treatment. In addition an organized method of hand placements allows for full coverage of the body and organs.

Dr. Hayashi passed on May 10, 1940. This was just prior to Japan's entry into WWII. Being a Reserve Officer, Dr. Hayashi knew he would be recalled to duty and therefore become responsible for killing many people. This he did not want to do, and so determined to end his life. In addition he wished to, and did, pass leadership over to Reiki to a Mrs. Hawayo Takata --perhaps because she would not be in Japan and therefore relatively safe and able to continue the practice.

Hawayo Takata was born at dawn on December 24th, 1900, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Her parents were Japanese immigrants and her father worked in the sugar fields. She worked very hard as she was growing up. She eventually married the bookkeeper of the plantation where she was employed. His name is Saichi Takata and they had two daughters. In October of 1930, Saichi died at the age of thirty-four leaving Mrs. Takata to raise their two children. In order to provide for her family, she had to work very hard with little rest. After five years she developed severe abdominal pain, a lung condition and had a nervous breakdown.

Soon after this, one of her sisters died and it was the responsibility of Hawayo to travel to Japan where her parents had moved to deliver the news. She also felt she could receive help for her health in Japan.

She took a steamership and was accompanied by her sister-in-law. After informing her parents of the death of her sister, she entered a hospital.
While there she became very sick and was in the hospital. The doctors were going to operate. As she was being prepared she kept hearing a voice saying "Operation not necessary". Eventually she jumped off the table asking "Is there another way?". The doctor had a sister who had been cured of dysentery at Dr. Hayashi's clinic and suggested to Mrs. Takata she talk with his sister.

The sister brought Mrs. Takata to the clinic and her treatments there began. After Mrs. Takata became well she wanted to learn this for herself. However Dr. Hayashi was not willing to teach her because she was a foreigner. Through the good graces of her doctor, Mrs. Takata was able to pursuade Dr. Hayashi to train her in Reiki. This training took a year and brought her to what we would now call Reiki Level II.

After this year she returned to Hawaii. In Hawaii she also learned the lesson of having the recipient perceive value in receiving treatments. She treated a neighbor but did not charge, this neighbor did not value the treatments and did not become well. She treated another relative and this time charged, and this relative did stay well. Thus the tradition of charging for Reiki treatment was reinforced.

In November 1936 Dr. Hayashi came to Hawaii for a speaking tour to promote Reiki. During this time he trained Mrs. Takata to teach Reiki, thus making her what we now would call a Reiki Master. As he left Hawaii he asked her to come to see him when he summoned her.

After some more time it was nearing when World War II would start, the part in Europe already having begun. Dr. Hayashi appeared to Mrs. Takata in a dream asking her to come to Japan. She did this and found Dr. Hayashi having his Naval Uniform out of storage and fretful. With the coming war he knew it was a matter of time before the Navy would call him out of retirement and he would be asked to perform actions he was not capable of doing due to his spiritual development.

At this time he passed to Mrs. Takata the leadership of Reiki. He gathered all the Reiki Masters to a gathering, announced Mrs. Takata to be the leader of Reiki, and then announced he would kill his physical body through bursting three blood vessels. As he continued speaking and lecturing those blood vessels burst and he died.
Mrs. Takata returned to Hawaii in 1937. She was soon followed by Dr. Hayashi and his daughter who came to help establish Reiki in Hawaii. In the Winter of 1938, Dr. Hayashi initiated Hawayo Takata as a Reiki master. She was the thirteenth and the last Reiki Master Dr. Hayashi initiated.

Between 1970 and her transition on December 11, 1980, Mrs. Takata initiated twenty-two Reiki Masters. Below is a list of the Reiki  Masters she initiated. This is the list she gave her sister before she passed through transition.

Spiritual Journey in Brief

Spiritual Journey in Brief

Spiritual growth to us simply means how to be closer to the Divine Source (the Creator) in your daily life, to be healthier, more peaceful, calmer and happier and to attain the ultimate goal of your life, enlightenment and then Yoga. We are sure that the heart is the key for only your heart can receive the blessing from the Divine Source. Blessing from the Divine Source is the only source of true peace, calmness and happiness. Blessing from the Divine Source is the mightiest power, so that it is the best help you can receive for your every need not only in your daily life, but also for your spiritual growth!

As the ultimate destiny is to return to the Divine Source, it is not the goal only for certain groups of people who believe that they are interested in the spiritual journey. It is the real goal of life itself. Then, returning to the Divine Source is not about how much you can do or how much you know. It is not about going to a higher or better place. It is about going closer to the Source of your True Self. So, what matter is how much you love the Divine Source. You need to realize this goal in your daily life so that you can really live your life to be closer to the Divine Source. You need to really live your life to share the love with others and to love the Divine Source more before you can reach the ultimate goal.

We start all the learning with Reiki. The word Reiki may sound very familiar to you. From the first degree, the attunement of Reiki already opens the whole sushumna from your crown chakra all the way down through your base chakra and connects you to divine energy and to the earth. The second degree awakens your Kundalini instantly and safely (details can be read in Reiki and Kundalini sections), and the fire of the Kundalini reaches at least the level of your navel chakra. The third degree attunement opens all of your main chakras, and brings the fire of your Kundalini higher.

Then, there is a Kundalini workshop where you can learn different techniques for your Kundalini: From a simple technique that can help your Kundalini to uncoil more to the advanced technique that stimulates the core of your Kundalini to rise faster, yet safely. In the Meditation workshop, a simple but very effective technique will help you to stimulate your pineal gland, the master gland in your body that controls other glands, to aid you in your meditation. The pineal gland is also the only gland that can produce melatonin and endorphin hormones. Melatonin regulates the sleep/wake cycle and endorphin is a hormone that helps your brain be calm without any negative side effects. You also learn how to connect yourself better to your higher consciousness and a very simple but advanced meditation technique so you can be a tool of the Divine Source.

Then, you are ready for something more important, the Inner Heart workshop. Have you heard that you are supposed to listen to and follow your Inner Heart for the Inner Heart always knows the truth, the real truth according to the will of the Divine Source? A secret of all ages is to be revealed, it is how to activate and listen to your Inner Heart, something that no one or no book has taught before. The Inner Heart is the core of your spirit (true self, higher self, super consciousness, atman) within you. The Inner Heart is the real spark of the Divine Source, the part that is always pure, untouched by impurities. The Inner Heart, as the spark of the Divine Source, always knows what Divine Source wants from you. By connecting to your Inner Heart the way you live your life is revealed to you so you still have enough time to correct your life, for the Inner Heart knows exactly the way the Divine Source wants your life to be. As your Inner Heart is activated and strengthened, your heart also opens bigger. You will feel real joy when the divine blessing fills your heart and you can enjoy your connection to Divine Source. You are reborn on earth!

Next, the journeys of your self in terms of spirit, soul and physical self are revealed in multidimensional ways in the Spiritual Advancement workshop. Starting from this point, we will not teach you any longer. We will guide you to understand the truth by yourself by using your Inner Heart. This is the learning for your brain, soul and spirit. You can observe how much your spirit grows within this two-day retreat workshop. You will understand the purpose of life and what you should do to fulfill your ultimate destiny.

From here you are then ready for something people have been talking about, but few have really achieved. You will be able to reach your soul consciousness and then your true self consciousness. Here, you will not simply know or communicate with your higher consciousness. You will be conscious as your higher consciousness and understand more about your true self. Not until you realize more about your true self can you know more about the Source of your true self, the Divine Source. You will realize more about the Divine Source, how you can really love the Divine Source.

Kundalini and Reiki

Kundalini and Reiki

With Kundalini and Reiki working in synergy, everything will be different. First, the preparation before Kundalini awakening is done by the first-degree attunement that occurs just one day before the actual Kundalini awakening. The preparation consists of a light cleansing, removal of all knots in the chakras along the sushumna and the opening of the whole sushumna. This is already a big leap in cleansing.

Second, the Kundalini awakening itself is an instant one. The second-degree attunement in Reiki consists of shaktipat to awaken the Kundalini of every practitioner. The fire of the Kundalini will reach at least the navel chakra and the energy will burst out around 1.5 to 2 meters above the crown chakra!

Then, as all the chakra knots along the sushumna have already been removed, the whole sushumna is open, and both Kundalini and divine energies are working in synergy, you can expect much better and faster results. As the cleansing is done simultaneously at all chakras at once by two of the most powerful energies, you can expect to have the full cleansing done within years. This means that the core of your Kundalini can reach your crown chakra within only a few years. And we are not simply saying it. As you know, we are sharing with you how to be able to use your Inner Heart, the all-knowing part of you. As you will be able to use your Inner Heart within months of the initial learning, you will be able to monitor your Kundalini with your Inner Heart and discover all you need to know for your spiritual growth with your Inner Heart. The ability to use the Inner Heart is a luxury for every spiritual practitioner. Indeed, for us the Inner Heart is a must for spiritual growth. Without being able to use your Inner Heart, you may be doing things according to concepts or ideas, but they may not be the real truth. The real truth is known only by your Inner Heart.

Distant Reiki Healing Tips

Distant Reiki Healing Tips

Practice hands on reiki :-

I am definitely one that needs to heed this advice. I have a tendency to focus on distant healing too much because I love it and I have seen it work really well. (I sometimes wonder if people have different propensities towards certain styles of spiritual practice. some drawn to prayer. some to meditation. that sort of thing. Because, I know I am drawn to distant healing.)

But if you want to give better distant healing. You should give lots of hands on healing. It is the foundation of the reiki path, and although it is the focus of the first level of reiki training, it should never be considered a level you move past, or eventually have no need for. There is no substitute in reiki practice and training to hands on healing.

Healthy diet :-

I have talked about this a little before. But, the healthier your diet, the healthier you’re energy channels, and the easier the reiki will flow. If you think about it like this. Perhaps when you received your reiki 1 empowerment, as a result you were able to give 80% worth of your potential reiki. The last 20% comes from healthy diet, meditation and exercises. Anything that will improve the overall healthiness of your Nadis (subtle energy channels, through which your shakti flows).

It is also a fact that the healthier your channels and then the more easy your ki flows through them, the more clear will be your mind, and the stronger will be your willpower, greater will be your dedication to spiritual practice/healing, and your intention will be healthier too.

Keep your distant healing box up-to-date :-

It is a topic of disagreement within the wider reiki community as to whether it matters whether you have a strong and clear intention when giving distant healing. I personally think it does matter. And that it helps if you clearly have in mind what it is you are sending reiki too. Which is easier to do if you keep the contents of your distant healing box up-to-date. But, having said that, I also have a great big shoe box, with everything I have ever sent distant healing to within it. And I cannot get close to either keeping in mind, nor remembering everything within that box. But when I pull out a piece of paper that says “mum situation” or “donyo work situation”. I am sure they have benefited from the reiki, and have improved or healed as a result. So I also believe that some benefit is still received when you do not have a clear intention or know what you are sending reiki to.

Focus when you are sending distant healing :-

This is similar to the last point. But, is worth having under its own point. I am a believer in the idea that having a clear focus on the object you are sending reiki to helps the distant healing. Further than this though, I think you will send better healing if your mind is clear and present when you do it. So, this tip is to say. Do not be distracted when you are sending your distant healing (watching TV for example. although I confess I do this all the time)

Drink lots of water :-

This is a good tip for any type of reiki practice. It helps reduce the intensity of clearing symptoms.

Practice meditation :-

If you go along with the theory that being able to focus during your distant healing sessions is helpful then meditation is a key to helping you develop that inspiration. Daily sitting meditation was recommended by Usui Sensei, and is great for helping build concentration.

One of the important things to know about meditation is that it is about quality and consistency. It is better to sit for 10 minutes and really practice meditation every day, than to force yourself to sit for 5 hours and only do it every now and again. His Holiness Dalai Lama recommends us beginners start with 2 minutes. That way as well your mind does not rebel against the idea of sitting, and you actually find yourself looking forward to the task. Much better than setting yourself up to fail!

Send Distant Reiki to your self sending distant reiki :-

This is a great little trick, I think anyway. Julian my friend always send reiki to himself and his loved ones at all times. But, if you are dealing with a specific healing situation or issue I strongly recommend including yourself in your distant reiki healing box, or whatever you use (sometimes Julian just thinks of the things he is sending reiki to and folds her hands at her waist).

This will help you stay clear and centered while you are sending reiki and will also pacify any potentially intense clearing symptoms that may arise from the healing session. As distant healing is a good way of dealing with emotional issues, and past situations, this is very likely.

Do not over do it :-

As with sitting meditation, 10 mins of concentrated, focused, good quality distant healing is better than 10 hours of distracted, bored, mindless distant reiki. A Tibetan proverb says 1 moment of meditation is better than 100 years of normal life. And you are more likely to be consistent with your reiki practice and healing sessions if you keep a happy mind that does not feel burdened by having to slog through hours and hours of reiki.

Push yourself to increase your self-discipline and self-Confidence.

So when you are starting efforts towards your aim of joyful life..................
